Yesterday, I intentionally baked double the recipe of No-Knead Artisan Gluten-Free Bread to have leftovers for today’s dish, which turned out to be the best gluten-free French toast I’ve had.
Other than being quick and easy to make, the thing I like about French toast is that it helps eliminate food waste by utilizing leftovers. It’s a practical, not frugal, way of reducing food expenses.
In France, French toast is known as “pain perdu,” which translates to “lost bread.” The name reflects the practice of using stale or leftover bread to make the dish, thus giving new life to bread that would otherwise be discarded.
How to Make the best gluten free french toast
Does the type of gluten-free bread matter? Not really. Any gluten-free bread, as long as it is not gummy, should work fine. What makes an amazing French toast is the creamy-rich, spice-infused custard mixture.
You don’t have to add too much to a slice of bread to make the best gluten-free, dairy-free French toast. Less is more, as we say, applies to this recipe as well.
Here’s what you need to do to make the best gluten free french toast:
- Choose any decent gluten-free bread. What’s the best gluten-free bread for French toast? Nothing too specific. Unlike most recipes, which use soft bread like white sliced bread or brioche, this one uses firm artisan gluten-free bread with less moisture.
- Prepare a rich and spice-infused custard mixture. A good oat milk or dairy free heavy cream, fresh eggs, sweet spices cinnamon, and nutmeg are key to a flavorful custard mixture.
- Soak the Bread. Dip bread slices into the custard mixture for about 30 seconds on each side. It allows the bread to absorb the rich custard mixture fully.
- Pan Frying. Heat a non-stick pan or skillet over medium heat. Add a medium cube of Naturli vegan butter to the pan. Once hot, place the soaked bread slices in the pan and fry for 2-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Serve Warm. Serve the French toast immediately while warm, then top with your choice of fresh berries and honey, agave, or maple syrup.
Main Ingredients And Substitutes
- Gluten free rustic bread—homemade gluten free bread is best, but if time is an issue, any store-bought gluten-free bread is fine, too.
- Oat milk—a barista gluten free oat milk works very well for the custard mixture, but rice, soy, almond, and cashew milk are good alternatives.
- Fresh Eggs—fresh is king when it comes to eggs. For the vegan option, use Just Egg – a plant-based egg substitute that tastes almost like a real egg.
- Spices—the combination of nutmeg and cinnamon is what makes this French toast the best among the rest.
- Vegan Butter—the recipe uses Violife unsalted, but if you’re not allergic to nuts, Naturli vegan block and Miyokos vegan butter are the best choices.
